A lot of Bang, for not a lot of Buck !!!!!

Good radio, small compact & well built. Not specifically designed for Ham (Amateur) radio use, but it does work and do the job very well. It is also true & fair to say the UV-5R series also covers many other frequencies outside of the Amateur band which should be used with caution following local rules & laws of the area. In my case this unit was purchased so my partner and myself could communicate with each other while out and about walking, cycling etc. and to keep things and be legal to use these we now have joined a local amateur radio club to get out foundation call signs. Some minor points about the radio: It would have been nice to disable the transmit key (PTT) to stop it transmitting while learning and studying ham course and then re-enable it after wards when passed etc. Radio is condemned for poor programing (difficult to setup) etc. In my opinion alone this is just down to a individual how hard or not things are to do. If you know nothing about it and find a full manual online about this radio then it is easy to understand ( i.e. what you are used to I guess). Myself I purchased a USB lead (cable) and via "CHIRP" programmed / setup the radios via a PC. by the way when I say programmed, I don't mean I wrote or rewrote the operating system etc. all I done was use "CHIRP" and enter a few frequencies on a screen into different memory locations which looks like a well known spread sheet office application !. In summery this is a budget radio with full price features and performance of a unit £100 + more expensive. if you get this radio after reading this. Please remember be responsible a keep it legal. :)

    Duel band ham radio

This ham radio is duel band meaning it should work on both uhf and vhf however it just doesnt work with any other type of radio and as i only have the one i cant say it will work with another of the same type you programme the frequency in and save to a channel as shown in manuel and still it wont work follow the software and computer programme after buying software disc and data cable specific to this radio and programme it from computer and it doesnt work in summery its a great paperweight but as a ham radio its garbage not worth any amount of money and infact if someone offered me another for nothing i would tell them where to stick it as its just a piece of plastic with speaker for white noise only total waste of money and should be banned from being sold on ebay

  • great little unit with tons of features !

excellent little unit, a bit daunting at first but pop on utube and everything becomes clear, its not a use out of the box unit but a little knowledge goes a long way, once your set up (and have a foundation licence) your away !

  • buy the programming cable and get chirp it makes life so much easier

Easy to use and if you buy the programming cable and download chirp it is easy to set up, I am unfortunately in a valley so haven't heard a peep from it yet but when I can get a decent base antenna and mount it as high as I can I should get to hear someone. It is extremely light and easily fits in the pockets on cargo pants. There are also loads of videos on YouTube all about these radios and a lot of amateur radio operators keep one at hand too.

  • Great Radio - Older Firmware

The Baofeng UV-5R series of radios are all very popular and very well priced. This high power offering ticks all the right boxes in terms of the quality we have come to expect from these Baofeng radios. This TP model is the basic 5R body case with a 7-8W power output as opposed to the standard 4w max you typically get from the standard 5R's. When comparing this model to the standard UV-5RE we can see some differences apart from the power output. Firstly, the TP has yet to be updated like most of the newer Baofeng. It still comes with the dreadful short stock antenna which is fine for close work but totally useless for anything else. - most people will leave this in the box and buy an aftermarket antenna. This is the best thing you could do with it. The second noticeable difference is in recieving sensitivity. The lower powered 5RE can out perform the TP by a large margin. tested with identical antennas the TP was struggling to 'recieve certain stations. A little off putting. The good news is when you come to transmit. The Tri power TP is as good as any other Baofeng but with a few extra watts in reserve. It performs really well with reports coming back saying how clear and loud the voice transmissions were. No real complains except the poor recieve capabilities. For the price you pay (£18.12 in my case) you got those extra watts of power... Wether that makes much difference is another story! Worth the money

  • almost out of date

Lovely solid radio but: Picks up fm broadcast no problem but where I live and for 10 miles radius no other signals whatsoever. I have tried 4 different ariels but nothing, I have also stood about a mile away from the Caradon Hill radio tv mast and still nothing. The problem is in the south west just about all RF signals are either digital or encripted and this is only analog. I think that maybe it may be ok in a big city because there seem to be so many positive reviews and also a great many youtube vids are american where they still have mostly analog signals. If you have been to america you will know that they are miles behind us in everything. As all RF signals will soon be all digital I really wish that I had paid more and bought a DMR radio.

  • Buy one

Retro styling and rugged. A nice little radio that performs well and the 8 watt setting definitely makes a difference compared to standard models. Some radio hams can be quite snobbish about baofeng users but they out perform some of the much more expensive handhelds.

  • Great value, better than you might expect.

Robust little radio, a little fiddly to program from the keyboard. The use of USB style connectors on the charger is a bit misleading as they are not the same voltage, potentially quite confusing. I have a few similar radios as well as the usual Icoms, Yaesus and a pile of Motorolas. This radio complete costs half what my Yaesu battery costs.... As a radio engineer the Baofeng is very handy to monitor various radio schemes while I am working on them. The most recent arrived a few days ago and have already ordered another.
