A Little Piece of Americana Preserved
Edgar Bergen’s Charlie McCarthy, the monocled ventriloquist doll wearing his very best evening suit and top hat looks like he has just stepped out of the Rainbow Room or the Astor Bar in the 1930’s This puppet has clearly been lovingly cared for for close to 50 years by his previous owners. My intention was originally to deconstruct the doll to get a better idea of how the mouth animation was built, so as to help in my own marionette building. After taking one look, I immediately decided to not take him apart; and to merely perform a non invasive investigation into his working parts. Thanks to excellentjohn, Charlie now holds a prestigious perch in my workshop/studio and oversees my newest brood of marionettes. I’m almost certain that I can hear whispers coming from the studio after dark ! 🤫
