Max Ophuls' heart-breaking story of a doomed romance is told largely in flashback and stars Joan Fontaine who, as a young girl, falls for dashing pianist neighbour Louis Jourdan. As a young woman, she submits to his charms and becomes pregnant but to him, she is just one in a long list of conquests. He forgets her until she returns to his life a married woman and even then, there is no happiness, just death and the end of dreams. Stunningly shot, with Fontaine at her most luminescent, this is arguably Ophuls' greatest film and ranks as one of the classic romantic tales of the cinema.
