Great Portable Radio Plus
I purchased this Retekess V115 Portable FM/AM/SW Radio Digital Rechargeable MP3 Player Speaker and picked it up this morning.
I’m a 67 year old owner of a semi private recording studio and label Indawoods Audio. So I’m quite familiar with a load of electronic gear.
I almost never review an item. But I thought I’d offer my/our take.
Out of the box I liked the unit. It is very compact but sounds above expectations. It doesn’t feel cheap but I’ll be respectful of It as I’m much larger than it is. That being said, I’m not expect any issues with reasonable care.
I read the reviews and concur with all of the positive ones. Those that have issues with the manual may not be used to multi functional buttons. It took me just a little bit to figure that out. Some options require a longer “hold” on a button to lock your selection in. Which prevents inadvertent selections. So… I didn’t find an issue there.
As mentioned, it sounds really good for its size with the standard EQ. The MP3 player works well with your micro SD card and offers a few EQ alternatives as well. It remembers where you left off even when the unit is powered down. The sleep timer can be set in 10 minute intervals up to an hour. My only thought is that it does not remember that, so it has to be reset each time. No real problem since it’s easy to set. But a memory there might be nice since I have a nightly routine.
The FM reception is pretty good here. As good as most of my receivers in our rural area. Which gives us problems with any over the air tv or radio gear. I have not checked the short wave yet. Some reviewers didn’t think the reception there was outstanding. I have, and have had, a few short wave units over the years. As the manual says, that always shines more at night. And outdoors the signal works better than inside. But, I can’t say I can offer a definitive rating for this unit yet. I’ll know more later.
I guess the bottom line is that it’s compact, fully functional, well thought out, and I’m happy to add it to my travel gear list. We do a bunch of off grid camping. The replaceable, rechargeable, 5v battery is great as it can be charged by any micro usb cable driven power source like computers, autos, external battery packs, or even solar charging devices that we use for our phones and gps devices when we’re away from civilization.
A tiny thought: It might be nice to add a “kick stand” so it can be angled if you find it receives better, or covers your listening position better. In fact, I was able to slip the end of the included plastic tab that is on the end of the carrying strap into the lowest slop on the rear side. Only a little bit so as not to mess anything up. I think it’s basically a vent to cool the item as it’s used. But that does hold the unit at about a 45 degree tilt. Alternatively, you can get a stand alone collapsible cell phone stand that can add stability on uneven surfaces and enhance your listening position options. But it’s not needed. Just a thought. It sounds great anyway.
I think that covers my experience so far. It’s great to have the stand alone radio on hand so I don’t have to depend on my cell phone battery for fm listening. I will do both of course, but there’s plenty of value in the unit to be happy that we’ve added it to our gear list.
Definitely worth it to us! Thanks for reading. Deane
