Must Buy Lens for All Canon DSLR owners

Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM is one of the cheapest lens from Canon but has excellent image quality, build quality, and usability. Image quality is superb being a prime lens especially stopped down but perfectly usable even wide open at 1.8. Build quality is much improved over it's previous model (50mm 1.8 II). It has metal mount and feels solid in hand and in use. Usability is excellent especially with new quick but silent autofocus (Has STM) for photos and great for videos. Has extra shutter blades for better bokeh compared to previous models. Has 1.8 aperture which can create nice subject isolation with blurred background for portraits. 1.8 max aperture also means great light gathering ability for low light situations. It also can be used on a full frame as well as cropped sensor cameras unlike EF-S lenses which can only be used on cropped sensor cameras. 50mm on the full frame is great as it gives a normal view useful as walk around general purpose, and 80mm equivalent on cropped sensor is great because that length is great for portraits.. As you can see, you get so much from this cheapest Canon lens. I recommend this lens to all Canon DSLR owners unless you have more expensive 50mm prime lens.

    Okay for the price

I'm not sure if the lens that I received was defective, but the autofocus does not work on my lens. I have read other reviews on this lens and many stated that the autofocus works. Other than that, the lens is good for the price that you are paying. It is a little loud when it's trying to focus, but a good dupe for a Canon 50 mm. The lens itself was brand new and the packaging did not damage the product during the shipping process.

  • Value for money when you are getting started in Full Frame

I have known about this lens for many years just never had an application where I could use it. Just purchased a 6D II and only have one FF lens a Canon 70-300mm IS II. Need something else to buy time until I can put some money aside for a wide zoom option. So with limit funds and to fill the void somewhat, I purchased this lens. This is the newest version so it has a better motor but still a bit noisy (maybe not for vlogging}, metal lens mount, smaller filter ring, front element does not rotate (CP filter) which is nice, that's about it. Not a "L" lens but it is nicely made and for the money you get alot. I would like to see Canon come out with a similar 35mm. Hoping the price of the new Tamron 17-35 mm comes down a bit in several months or Canon introduces a entry level FF wide zoom similar in specs of my zoom. Would make for a nice kit. I have Canon APS-C camera that I will use this 50mm on so it serves a dual purpose.

  • Nice Lens for Portrait and low light photography

This lens works very nice for portrait shoots. Gives a very nice detailed subject shot with nice blurred background! the results from this lens impressed me the first time I used it on the camera, I paired it up with a canon rebel EOS T6S and on viewing the photos on the computer even at 100% all I could say was WOW! Detail and sharpness was incredible. For the money $120.00 or a little less this one is a great investment. Only negative I found is that it is a little noisy on focusing for a STM compared to some of the others but the picture quality and quickness to focus still make it a great lens to own. The image quality more than makes up for this.

  • Can't go wrong. Fun lens.

The product is excellent for the price. Canon continues to make a good lens even better at the same price point. It isn't a perfect lens but it does the job. I'm giving this lens 4/5 stars only because I purchased a used lens. The lens is a little slow to focus indoors and the focus ring was rough at first. I think those issues may be because it is a used lens. I haven't used a new one so I can't say. I is sharp enough. I tend to shoot this lens at around 2.8 and it works fine. I have gotten sharp images at 1.8 and 2.0 but also many not-sharp images. The pros completely outweigh the cons with this lens. Great lens and the price is excellent. It is really difficult to get on this lens' bad side.

  • A Good, Sharp 50

50mm is the right length for me photographing people full-length, which is something I do fairly frequently for models' portfolios. The 24-105 f4 L isn't quite as sharp at the edges at the 50mm length as it should be, so after doing a little research, I decided to give this one a try. It's noticeably sharper at the edges of the frame, bringing out facial features the way they should be seen. (And shoes, too, for that matter!) It focuses quickly and quietly, and it even looks cool. ! recommend this lens highly!

  • Good prime lens, love the quiet STM and the variable aperture!

I really appreciate the ability to adjust the depth of field via changing the aperture -- coming from only having fixed-aperture, "zoom" lenses! Works well and the STM (stepping motor) feature is quieter than the older glass I have been using (which is good but has noisier auto-focus adjustments -- from the 2 zoom lenses in the standard package, that my family purchased with a Canon Rebel T3i, much closer to when that model was new)!

  • Best prime lens for Canon full frame.

This is my go-to lens when I am shooting portraits or just anything really. It’s small so won’t weight you down on the go. The wide aperture also allows for some basic astrophotography. I was able to photograph the Orion Nebula with this lens plus a 2x teleconverter. My only gripe is that you can only manually focus when power is applied through the contacts. This is only an issue if you are using a teleconverter or extender tube that won’t pass the contacts through. Overall one of the best lenses in my bag.

  • I’m new at this...

I just purchased my first camera and from what I’d gathered the starter lens was good for family functions and such, but for better quality I was advised to start with this lens. I LOVE IT! My pictures are coming out beautifully and I really love the 1.8 aperture. I don’t think that I’ll ever take it off (before I upgrade to whatever is next). I’m completely in love with this jewel. Images are sharp, crisp, and clean! I’m so glad to have started with this lens instead of waiting. I hope this helps someone decide. It’s definitely worth the reasonable cost.

  • Perfect lens!!!

I absolutely love the 50 mm ft 1.8 STM camera lens. I was looking for a new camera lens to record my makeup tutorials. I wanted a lens that would blur the background but focus on my face to capture the details of each color and the entire makeup look. This captures everything so perfectly for me!!! My money was well spent. I did all of my research before purchasing and found that this was the best lens for what I desired. Thank you so much and my order arrived on time as well. I think this has become my favorite lens thus far!!! Another great ebay purchase in the books!!
