Dewalt Hammer Drill DC988 still holds it's own
The DC988 is heavier than the Lithium models that have been brought in to replace but it remains a good workhorse. Best with a pair of 3 Amp batteries and certainly not less than 2.4 Ah capacity, especially if in use in hard working situations. The batteries simply clip up into the handle rather than slide as in later models. The charger is certainly quick enough when using a pair of batteries, so that I have never not been able to get on and work.
The handle is essential for hammer drilling and one of few Dewalt cordless drills to have this feature. The gearbox is three speed for drilling and also allows for multiple torque settings using the same dial on the front of the drill (seen in black in picture). The metal key-less chuck is to my mind more durable than the plastic alternatives, so long as it kept lightly oiled and firmly secured in use.
For everyday use I have a pair of 18Volt XR LI-ION used as a drill and impact driver. These are lighter but the drill lacks the handle, having no metal collar to take one. With Tendonitis now in both arms these lighter tools are some help.
