A true masterpiece!
If you're looking for a G1 Optimus Prime figure as close to perfection as possible, you won't be disappointed. This set has it all, but for the sake of being even-handed I've listed the pros and cons so that you can make up your own mind:
Pros:
- Cartoon accuracy - Optimus looks like he stepped straight out of the 80s cartoons which will bring back pleasant nostalgic memories for some of us older Transformer fans. The detailing is exceptional right down to the painted sky blue eyes which is a nice touch missing from the Takara version. (10/10)
- Playability - This set is full of features from his trailer which opens to form a battle station to store his blaster and axe, to the matrix of leadership which can be stored in his chest, and let's not forget roller. Also, if you purchase a few of the smaller masterpiece Autobot vehicles like Prowl or Hot Rod, you can store one of them in the trailer. Really does have all the features one could ask for in a masterpiece set. (10/10)
- Transformation - Whilst his transformation may be slightly tricky for younger children, I found the instructions easy to follow and the process relatively simple when compared to some other Masterpiece figures. (9/10)
- Durability - Apart from his thumb which will detach if too much pressure is applied when closing his hand, I found that everything else holds together very well. Whilst some would argue that he's designed as a display piece, not a children's toy, there's no reason why he can't be both unless your primary concern is keeping him in pristine display condition. (9/10)
Cons:
- Price - Depending on when you were able to acquire him, he can be quite pricey. I personally feel I got a bargain but I still paid over $200 which isn't exactly cheap. However, bear in mind you're getting a near perfect prime.
Overall verdict - 9/10
If you want the closest you can get to the perfect Prime and you're not too concerned about the price, this is the set for you.
