Pro level quality at a beginner level price
I'm a session vocalist and music producer, so when I was looking for a mic for vocal production for a smaller studio space that would be the best bang for my buck, I was excited to find this gem. It's already a fantastic deal brand new, but used prices make it an absolute steal. Beautiful clarity and solidly built, plus a pad and low end roll off switches to tailor it for specific applications. Once I got it in my main studio, I immediately began comparing it to my higher end condenser mics with a frequency analyzer. Unless you have a really well trained ear, you aren't going to notice a difference. The AKG recorded a little quieter, but the frequency curve was very similar to my FET. After volume matching, it was really hard to tell the difference when I A/B'd the two tracks. This will be perfect for my "studio away from the studio". I could absolutely see myself turning to this mic for client work in the future.
The shock mount is well made, and I think the matte black finish is a really slick look. The metal case is rugged and puts this over the top for me. It's nice to have a safe place to store the mic and shock mount when not in use or when I need to travel. I'd highly recommend the AKG P220 to anyone serious about capturing great quality at an unbeatable price. I'd rate this mic higher than any others at this price point, and even a few other more expensive options. Couple it with some basic acoustic treatment and understanding of proper recording techniques and you'll get a professional sounding recording every time.
