Building The General
On initially opening the box it is easy to be a bit overwhelmed by the number of parts, which translates immediately to some time spent assembling this kit! Speaking of which, the part identification is somewhat cryptic when relating the assembly manual to the parts stringers. To ease the pain, each set of parts is identified by a letter (A, B, C, etc) then subdivided by number, the problem is they are, in some cases, difficult to read without visual aid so visual parts recognition is an excellent supplement. Being a Gauge 1 modeler myself, the biggest challenge was the modification of the kit to fit my 45mm track. Which was my intention before the kit even arrived. The kit is the correct scale for 1:25 standard gauge being 2.26" track gauge but quite incorrect for my 1.77" gauge! This dictated a side line effort of planning and implementation to make The General compatible with my other Gauge 1 trains. I enjoyed this challenge immensely. It took me about 30 hours to start from the box of parts to sitting this beautiful modified locomotive on my Gauge 1 track. Great model
The model is very nice, the instruction book is very good and easy to follow. The model fits together well, and for me the brass colored parts were easy to strip, however the decals did not hold up well for the time between production and my build, this was easy to fix. The track or base is a very nice touch by the manufacturer, however they are completely the wrong time period and was very easy to fix, and or upgrade. Love this kit & this is my 3rd one. I am doing different engines with it. Now the 1869 CP & UP Locos
For an old kit the fit of parts is great. I had fun building it & 2 more I am doing now. The General was my first HO loco back in 1956 on my layout..I am doing the 1869 Meeting of the Rails, spurred on by an article in " Old Model Kits"..
