  • Huge disappointment

There is no doubt that the 345LM is a solid and robust piece of kit and may be fine for the basics of getting from one place to another. On the other hand it has disappointed badly in a number of other significant respects. I already own a Garmin sat nav that I've used in my car for several years so I had high hopes of this one for use on my motorbike. But on a tour of Northern Spain it proved, for the most part, worse than useless. It hardly ever seemed to know where we were and it was desperately slow at calculating or recalculating routes, which meant frequent changes of direction when it finally did come up with instructions. For me the most annoying and restricting problem involved setting up routes with multiple towns as waypoints to define a day's riding. The process is very clumsy and, when finally completed, the specified waypoints are usually completely ignored, along with most of the selected route preferences/avoidances, resulting on us being sent on totally unwanted routes. Most of the time we gave up and simply reverted to paper maps. To avoid the need to look at the Garmin screen while riding I paired the unit with my bluetooth helmet headset for voice instructions. The communications generally worked ok. Frequently, however, the Garmin gave very unhelpful instructions when starting off such as 'navigate to the indicated route' without giving any visual or audible instruction on how to do so. Frequently it gave bizarre instructions such as 'in # km, navigate off road' or 'in # km turn left onto unpaved road (which didn't exist) and then do a U turn.' These strange instructions would come randomly - often when we were already on the road needed to get to the requested destination. And yes, I did check that the navigation settings were not set for off-road options. Apart from these problems, the maps were generally very crude and uninformative, showing virtually no road numbers for confirmation. You're supposed to be able to use the touch screen to change (shape) a defined route, but every time I tried it the route was totally destroyed. Then there are the voice commands using street names, which Garmin say "virtually redefine the concept of spoken turn-by-turn directions", They do indeed, but not as Garmin imagine where (foreign) names are involved. In practice they totally lacked any understanding of Spanish terms or names. 'Calle' (street) was pronounced as 'call'. Road number prefixes such as 'AS' and 'LE' were pronounced as words and not initials. And actual street names were so comprehensively mashed up as to be unrecognisable and therefore useless for navigation. Finally, the unit has a frequent habit of completely switching off while I'm trying to use the maps or set up a route or perform some other touch-screen function. I have had long conversations with Garmin Support people. They try hard but they have not been able to shed any light on the route/waypoint issue or anything else, and have simply suggested sending the unit back to the dealer for a replacement. Fair enough except for the inconvenience of having to remove fairings to remove the carefully routed power cabling from the bike and the suspicion that the replacement will be no different. All in all, a big disappointment.
