Necessary item?
Apparently it’s a legal requirement to carry two in date breathalysers when travelling through France in a vehicle. Although nobody has ever been prosecuted for not having one. It’s not worth the grief explaining to the French police why you don’t have one, and won’t help your case if you’ve done something wrong already.
