Great overall lens with slight issues

This is definitely one of my favorite lens ever, rendering a 50mm full frame field of view the lens is useful for most types of photography. Be aware though that for a crop sensor lens it is heavier than most but for some of the larger aps-c cameras balance is not an issue. Image quality is superb, but chromatic aberrations are prevalent, though they can be easily fixed by the likes of Lightroom and other such photo editing programs. Focusing the lens is quite easy as the auto-focus performs wonderfully and the manual focusing ring is smooth. All-in-all you'll love the lens, you just have to get used to its quirks.

Great lens wit compatibility issues (newer cameras)

This lens is tack sharp in the focus plane, has beautiful and creamy bokeh, and has super nice contrast and colour. The only issue is that it seems to not be calibrated to some of the newer cameras with different AF motors. I have a Canon T6i (750D), and it seems that the Sigma 30mm f1.4 was never calibrated for this newer model camera, or the T6s/760D, or the new 80D. I have tried of these lenses on my body, and both had issues with the AF (generally front-focusing issues, although it would sometimes back focus depending on the lighting). This has not happened with other lenses I own or have tried with my body, so it is not a camera body issue. If you go to the Sigma website, it lists all the cameras that this lens is compatible with, and the 3 cameras I listed are not on that page. I think this compatibility issue is simply due to the release dates of these cameras vs the lens, however, when I tried to contact Sigma on the issue, they failed to answer my questions. There are work arounds; the lens and body can be sent to Sigma, or your local photography store. There is also the Sigma USB dock that can be used to calibrate the lens focus at certain focusing distances (I have not tried this but it seems to solve other people's issues). If you can get these AF issues worked out, or if you shoot video and don't rely on AF as much, this is an amazing lens with exceptional value. If Sigma can work on a firmware update that can somehow be implemented without the 70$ USB dock (loading it onto your SD card for instance), this would absolutely be a no brainer. With the way this lens behaves inconsistently, I would say it is only worth it if you can calibrate the AF.

  • Excellent lens!

I bought this lens because I wanted a focal length that would give me the same field of view a 50mm lens would provide on a FF dSLR or a 35mm film SLR. After shooting for about 30 years on a Canon AE-1 with a 50mm lens, I wanted to get a similar experience using my Canon 77d. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens does exactly that. It has become my favorite prime lens along with the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8. The Sigma 30mm is a delight to use, and the f/1.4 aperture allows the use of lower ISO settings and faster shutter speeds. I'm getting great results!

  • Sigma DC-30mm F-1.4 AF HSM DC-Lens-For-Canon

This lens is great for an amateur photographer. I'm an amateur and noticed the focus is a bit soft at wide open aperture. It's not that big of a deal but I was a little disappointed. Closing down the aperture to 2.4 gets the focus better for sure. You lose some of that wonderful blurred background but hey it's my first 30mm lens. For fairly close up artistic stuff it worked great at 1.4. Built like a tank. Auto focus seems to work for me. Really my only complaint is soft focus. I enjoy using this lense for artistic pictures. It's a decent choice for those who don't have an unlimited budget.

  • Sharp image, good price durable built

Sharp image, reasonable price, and durable built. I have a canon 50mm f/1.4, that I regularly use, but this Sigma 30mm f/1.4 out perform my old canon lens in auto focus and sharp image. It became my primary lens now. It's a bit heavy bulky compare to the canon lens.

  • Good lens overall

I haven't used it as much as I should to rate it in full, but so far the only thing I'm not happy about is the Chromatic Aberration. It seems that with Canon cameras, the Sigma Lenses don't develop their full potential. Also the AF is not accurate sometimes. The lens itself is very sturdy and it does feel premium. Not sure if those issues I found can be corrected with an update of the lens firmware.
