Additional InformationAn Indian teen in France goes to work for his father's culinary adversary in this drama based on the bestselling novel by Richard C. Morais. Put young Hassan Kadam (Manish Dayal) in a kitchen, and he's bound to emerge with a dish that will dazzle. When Hassan's family is forced to move from their native India, his Papa (Om Puri) relocates to a peaceful hamlet in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val in the south of France. Determined to give his new neighbours a little taste of home, Papa decides to open an Indian restaurant in the village, and names it Maison Mumbai. Meanwhile, across the street at the traditional French restaurant Le Saule Pleureu, uptight proprietor Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) doesn't exactly welcome the competition. When Madame Mallory ignites a bitter feud that quickly escalates, the only hope for a peaceful resolution lies in Hassan's talent for French haute cuisine, and his growing affections for Mme. Mallory's pretty young sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon). Subsequently impressed by Hassan's undeniable culinary talents, Mme. Mallory agrees to become Hassan's mentor, in the process providing the perfect creative environment where his unique fusion cuisine can thrive. Lasse Hallstrom directs a film produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake.
ReviewsRolling Stone - Linus Sandgren's camera caresses the cuisine like an ecstatic lover. It brought out the foodie in me., Chicago Sun-Times - Mirren's Madame Mallory unctuously oozes her dedication to perfection from every pore -- and it's truly delicious to watch her work her magic up on the screen.

  • Romantic feel good foodie film set against a lovely landscape backdrop.

Really great feel good film. For anyone who likes a bit of comedy, romance, food & landscape with great acting which is really enjoyable despite its predictability! We ended up watching it with our 9&7 year old who also really enjoyed it.

  • Good lighthearted entertainment

An Indian Restaurant opens in France across the street from a top Michelin Star Restaurant - that's when serious competition begins to see who will win the race. Very nice film, well worth watching.

  • A real feel good film, a must see.

Wonderful feel good film. Some sad bits; however mostly upbeat. Not side-splitting funny, but humorous throughout with a great ending to the story. I will watch this many times, which is rare for most films.

  • Loosen up Helen!

This dvd is OK but it could have been improved if Helen Mirren tried acting as someone else instead of portaying herself, as usual. Worth buying, if bought cheaply.

  • Wonderful story - compelling viewing

Totally amazing, as is Helen Mirren. Fantastic story, beautifully filmed of a family and an individual's struggle to succeed - great "feel good" factor. This is not a DVD that I will easily loan out !

  • Food passion

As a retired chef it enthused me to pick up my knives and cook again. It tells the story well, why chefs want to be chefs not for the acclaim but for the passion of food. Loved it
