Bought this to replace a damaged insert that has been in use for a while. Yes, a pain to install especially with the blades on. The good news is that the included blades are actually really sharp as received so changing out blades when adding the mulch insert makes the whole thing easier to deal with. Works great, tricky to install
I mowed with this kit installed for the first time today and am very happy with the results. Instead of having big mounds of grass all over the yard I have an even coating of finely chopped clippings. Some sites are selling this kit as being compatible with all 42-inch John Deere mowers, but it is not a good fit for all of them. It does not fit the D-series (sold by Lowes) although it can be installed with some extra steps. I should mention that the listing here on ebay was correct and did not say it was compatible with the D-series. I knew about this issue when I bought it and knew how to deal with it. Because the screw doesn't align with the existing hole, I had to drill a new hole in my D-130's mower deck and use a clamp to get it to conform to the lip of the mower deck. Also, it was necessary to remove the mower deck to install. Once I did all that, it worked very well, and the price here on ebay is $30 less than most online retailer sites. Very happy with my purchase.

ok product, but a bear to install.
This is a perfect fit for my John Deere LA-115, so much so, that it is difficult to install. I suggest removing the deck to install. Also, much easier to change blades with the deck off. I am happy to finally stop discharging grass on the driveway and in my mulch beds. Update! I just used it, and I am not impressed. Does not work very good.
I got a good deal here on this item. Then I installed the mulch kit, and have to cut twice to get clippings mulched. The same with a half inch growth, still cutting twice. I have had Cubs, Craftsman, and other John Deere riders. This system is by far the worst of them all. Poorly designed product, would not recommend. Works GREAT.
Bought this for my JD Z225 and it works GREAT. Easy to install, goes on without removing the blades, no tools required. You must get the chute cover area of the mulch kit to slide into the groove on the deck before bolting up the far end.
