  • A “sleeper hit“ 7 string

In the early 2010s, BC Rich quietly released a stream of killer 7 string Vs before discontinuing them with all the fanfare of a UFO coverup. A welcome departure from the throngs of strat-like extended range dj0nt machines that still dominate the market to this day, these were radically different axes with excellent components: mahogany bodies, Grover tuners, ebony fretboards, maple necks, and Floyd 1000 trems. Mine came with aftermarket Seymour Duncan Blackouts in place of the stock BDSM pickups, which were the original guitar’s biggest weak point. The Floyd’s good to go. The neck is wide and a bit on the thicker side, but doesn’t get into baseball bat territory. The cord jack is recessed into the upper wing on the back, so that the eyes aren’t drawn away from the quilted maple top. The overall design intent is classic BC Rich: radical, weapon-like, and a lightning rod for audience attention. Plugged in, the sound is just as mean as you’d expect: power chords and chugging take on a sinister new dimension, and you find yourself wondering what you were doing without this low end for all these years. Though there were times in the past that a good condition JRV7 could be had for as little as $400 or $500, as they become rarer their prices are knocking up to the $800-$1000 range. Think fast.
