  • Made in China - we'll see

The 2 metal bands that have to be installed around the glass collector are difficult to install. I would recommend changing the design (preferable) , or shipping the collector with the bands installed. If you are not handy with tools you are going to have trouble with this. I mentioned this to one of the Waterwise reps on the phone . He said they were aware of it. You have to unplug the top section of the distiller from the boiler , and then unplug the boiler from the wall outlet , before moving the boiler to the sink to clean it . With my old 9000 I only had to remove the boiler and the collector from the housing to move them over to the sink. The 4000 is a little more inconvenient - but maybe I'll get used to it. Also, the fan runs continually, whenever the distiller is powered, not just when the water is boiling, as with my 9000. There is no need for this - it just increases the electric bill. On a positive note I wanted the stainless steel interior (without a coating), and a glass or stainless steel collector, which this model has. Not many have these features without spending a lot of money. My 9000 was made in the USA. It is still going strong after 20 years. This one is made in China.

  • I hope it lasts as long as the others did.

This is the 3rd Waterwise distiller I've used in over 20 years---they don't last forever, but all things considered, an average of 10 years is pretty good. The new pitcher & handle is a bit tricky to assemble---the instructions require some imagination (what tripped me up was that the handle has a 1" covering strip that has to be pried off in order put the screws in...this was not immediately clear on the assembly illustrations) but once it's done, it is better than the older model with the white lid that had several little pieces to deal with. I hope this one lasts as long as the others (we do 1 gallon every couple days for the coffee machine). To clean, I suggest putting about 3 inches of white vinegar and letting it soak for a couple hours, and then rinse and wipe clean. It works as well as the chemical descaler. This doesn't have to be done that often---maybe once a month. From what I've read, the carbon filters may not be necessary (I just use the empty spout)---they don't make a difference in the taste or purity of the water. Also, consider using a plug-in set a timer so that the water doesn't boil out completely.
