  • Good, high-capacity UPS

Very comfortably copes with a high-end gaming PC, an NAS and a large monitor with capacity to spare. Battery replacement is easy and doesn't require power-down. Simple controls and informative indicator LEDs

  • Good solid entry level personal UPS

Having worked with these for years, I finally got the chance to become an owner of one of these after they were superseded by the SMT variant. Originally they were far to expensive to justify until that happened. The 1500 unit I brought had the original APC 17Ah batteries installed, but did not mean that it was below providing a good amount of clean power to shut down my personal pc during a power failure. I run 2 screens (205 Watt load) and I was still getting an 30 minutes of runtime before I needed to shutdown to save the batteries from an overly deep discharge. The APC powerchute software can be problematic if you do not have the right USB chipset on your pc, so I went for the serial connection, which worked well. For the most part, these are designed to run a pc long enough to shut it down in a courteous manner, but having the load and incoming mains voltage under scrutiny at all times, you tend to learn how to squeeze the most out of the batteries before you have to shut them down. Eventually when the original batteries began to struggle during a mains outage, I went and got the high capacity 22Ah batteries to give my UPS a new lease of life and after a calibrate session or two, was surprised at how much more runtime I was getting (over 1 hour 30 minutes). If you run a high end gaming machine that runs at over 800 watts, this unit will still give you time to batten down the hatches, as you can configure the amount of capacity left in the batteries before it forces everything to close. For me, the Automatic Voltage Regulation is a must, because it can reduce the incoming mains voltage if it goes a little too high, as well as boost it should it get too low (The reason my pc was regularly just rebooting) without even touching the batteries. The power conditioning circuitry that these babies incorporate can really clean up what your blindly chucking at your desktop and if you have large amounts of data on your pc and no NAS, this will give you some piece of mind when the lights flicker during the bad weather or a thunderstorm! If you go for the 1000 version, the only real difference is the capacity of the batteries (about a 3rd of the 1500's), so if you go to the trouble of getting a better battery setup, you can still chuck a larger load at it safely until the batteries really do go flat. If you thinking of using one in a solar setup, anything above the 1500 is a 48 volt setup, but the 1500 and down are 24 volt !
