I would highly recommend these over the comparatively tasteless varieties the old bloke neighbour at my allotment grows.
First time growing these, but I’ll definitely be growing them again next year.
They ripen early and just keep going, producing around sixteen fruits on each truss.
In midsummer they are the sweetest tomatoes you will ever taste, now in late September the sweetness has faded slightly, leaving a strong and very pleasant tomato flavour.
So the sweetness is probably very dependent on the weather, but even when not so sweet the flavour is still excellent.
The only minor problem I found with this variety was excessive side shoots.
The plants will shoot again and again from the same place after removing side shoots, especially near the base of the stem, although once they set fruit the number of shoots produced did reduce.
Having said that, Due to me mislabeling a few seedlings, I accidentally found they produce well if you don’t remove side shoots and just let them grow as they will.
Without removal of side shoots they grow into fairly large, but quite open plants producing more, but smaller fruits, I’d say about the same amount of fruit in weight as when grown as cordons.
The best thing about sungold though is not the flavour, but the look on your allotment neighbors face when you give him on to try, and he suddenly realises the last twenty years of growing only moneymaker tomatoes and recommending them to everybody was a complete waste of time.
