Period drama based on Shakespeare's tragedy about a power-hungry duke who thirsts for the throne. Set in the 1930s, the film follows Richard (Ian McKellen), the hunch-backed Duke of Gloucester, as he plots to remove the only obstacles between him and the throne of England: his elder brother Edward (John Wood) and his two sons. First, though, Richard seduces and ultimately marries Lady Anne (Kristin Scott-Thomas) whose husband he killed during the Civil War. From here he battles his way ruthlessly through the opposition until the crown is upon his own head - but the problems of King Richard III are only just beginning.
