    Important things to know...

The dye only blends in with existing colours and has a blue tint to it, so it'll make white shirts blue, pink shirts a deep purple, etc. You'll also need 250g of salt for the hand wash variety and extra sachets depending on the weight of your clothes (1 sachet per 250g dry weight clothing.) There was a slight bit of uneven coverage even on 100% cotton but it wasn't too noticeable.

needs a bit of mixing and matching

I no longer needed this dye by the time it arrived, but I'm keeping it for future use. The Dylon machine dyes are effective as far as they go, but the colours are rather a 'blunt object'... too 'in your face' and strong. I need to mix and experiment with colours to get exactly the right shade. So I am very sorry that the small dylon tins of multi purpose and cold dyes have been discontinued. What I did on this occasion was - I bought the olive green & black shades in the hand dye sachets. I opened both sachets. I took a small scoop of the olive green dye out and put it to one side (carefully!) Then I added the same sized scoop of black dye to the olive green in the sachet (again, carefully!) Then I dissolved the dye with salt in hot water as per the instructions and I dyed my jacket using this mix. As I was hand dyeing it, I was able to keep an eye on the shade as it developed – I wouldn't have been able to do this in the washing machine. Eventually it came out the perfect colour to match my Converse trainers! (see picture). So with a bit of ingenuity you can still get the result you want, despite the discontinuation of the huge range of colours in the tins. However if you just wanted to dye an old towel a particularly obvious & striking shade, then the machine dyes are of some use.

  • Good for dyeing wool fabrics and re-useable for more than one item

Good for dyeing fabrics that are difficult to dye in washing machine such as wool and I also managed to dye a number of items sequentially to make the dye mixture go further.

  • Just a warning - not suitable for restoring a small area of colour in a heavy garment.

I only wanted to repair a few square inches of bleaching on a pair of black jeans. Followed the instructions to the letter but the black dye only partially worked, made it a bit darker but not completely black. To be fair, the instructions said it would cope with a 250g garment but the jeans were more like 600g. But on the other hand, to use two or three packets would have been very expensive - nearer to the value of the jeans! - and impractical because it would have needed a bathtub for the operation and I only had a bucket. So maybe ok for a smaller or thinner garment.

  • Good value dye

I have literally just finished using it and your email for a review came through! These dyes are good, they cover well and give a good result. I use them to make my partner's greying shirts black again. I will buy again.

  • Not great

I found this really messy to use. And found it didn't cover very well. Was a bit streaky. I used a dye before that you just put in the machine and it was great. You have to put this in a basin/bucket and mix it alot with your hands.(make sure you have rubber gloves) I found it hard not to splash everywhere but maybe it was just me !! I dyed pale grey cushion covers and they came out a darker grey not black!

  • Works on feathers

Used this to dye feathers black for a project- they didn't come out pitch black but more of a glossy navy colour (which was perfect for my needs anyway) It can dye a decent amount of fabric/feathers and the instructions are easy to follow although the salt is not included, luckily I had enough anyway.

  • Hand Dye

Although this is a better way to dye your clothes rather than ruin the washing machine and spend ages rinsing and cleaning it. I'm inclined to think I would rather use the machine than do it by hand too fiddly - but product does work.
