He knows his flawed but loving father is, was and always will be The Champ. The Frances Marion screen story is winningly updated in this heart-tugger directed by Franco Zeftirelli and starring Jon Voight, Faye Dunaway and Ricky Schroder. Voight plays Billy, the big-hearted brawler who returns to the ring to provide for his son after the boy's wealthy, estranged mother (Dunaway) begins to vie for the child's affection. And Schroder makes his feature-film debut a memorable one, an honest and moving portrayal of the steadfast and loving son.

    The chemistry between John Voight and Ricky Schroeder is the key to this film. Unmissable.

    If you like a real weepie, this film is for you. I've seen it several times now, and even though I know what's coming, I always cry buckets at the end, and so will you. Ricky Schroeder's is incredible, especially since he was only eight at the time. 2000 children were interviewed for the part of T.J. and you can see why Schroeder was chosen. He won a golden globe for his performance, but I thought it was good enough for an Oscar. Haunting theme music from Dave Grusin, and dramatic cinematography. There are useful "additional features" on this DVD too. Well worth the money.
