Just one of those things-
When I read about this film it was praised for being very creepy with many twists and turns. In reality it was more a study on modern life in places like Zurich Switzerland or Austria and surrounding. It became an exploration at-least to me into how children behave in these affluent regions. It was very fascinating to learn the actions of the two twin boys and understand the serenity and pubescent "cool" of them. They were a cute show all of themselves but the creepy "mom" was most surely a "let down". In fact her entire context as a character was without any creepy depth or direct mystery. In this sense the film was not truly anything spooky at all more a study about quiet country life in affluent European manner and context. I really was disappointed with this as some type of thriller regardless of the eruptive ending. If there was some hidden message to this film it was not entirely successful at carrying the momentum forward for the picture. By the time I got to the ending I felt this was an exploration into European culture and child patterns and behavior. Its tone was completely different from an American film particularly on sensitivity for one. It was a total loss unless one is skilled in reading between the lines. A practice I felt was actually unnecessary in this case. As an effort it was sensational in a way carried strongly by the twin boys but would have been more successful had it been through the eyes of American production interests which I don't think it is. This was a loss but again it could depend on what one is looking for. I was looking for a serious scare and an intricate plot. For one looking for an alternative to American film making styles and perhaps some good or even great acting the results could be different.
