Weighing in at 4 pounds 4 ounces, the FT-2900R version radio transceiver is a durable piece of equipment. The entire body of the device is crafted from die-cast materials with soft plastic push buttons strategically placed along the front panel. A heat sink provides protection for surrounding surfaces as there is no cooling fan built into the transceiver. This heat sink extends two inches past the rear panel for maximum protective coverage. Adding an external antenna is an option with the back-panel input. There is a lot of emphasis placed on the quiet design of the mobile Yaesu FT-2900R radio transceiver lending to the lack of audible mechanical clicking from the buttons. For your own operating comfort, you have the ability to set a digital click sound by using the menu to program this function. All of the featured operational buttons have a translucent design complete with a built-in backlight except for the power on and off button and the repeater Internet/lockout button. A handheld microphone with a straight-forward design is built into the FT-2900R transceivers. A DTMF (dual tone multi-frequency) keypad is featured on the rear side of the mic for easy use. Great radio, runs hot
Radio has great power output, many useful features, and rugged quality. I've used it for 2 days now and the biggest issue is the heat especially on high power. Radio can easily get to 150f after a 15 minute QSO on high power. Either point a fan towards it or install a cooling fan of some sort.
