great radio
I purchased this as a dual band radio in my Go-Box kit (for portable operation) . It is a great radio, simple to program and operate. I think it's easier to program manually than to use the programming cable and software (which I didn't get to work). A true dual band radio with a unique cross band feature that works really well. I have recommended this radio to be placed in two different EOC's because of it's simple operation and the fact that It also handles a TNC to use it with packet/Winlink RMS Express. Installation with the detachable remote head is also easy, but the kit sold by Kenwood is a little pricy, so I made my own.

This is one of the dual band radios that I actually enjoy!
This radio has a modest output of 50 watts compared to the 281a (65 watts) and the ft-2900 (75 watts). But the great thing about it is the fact that it does cross band repeat.a great function for a ham who does not want to be tied down to the ham shack but can use his ht to work a repeater. E.G. my 70 cm ht can hit my house from anywhere on the farm and I can hit the repeater, but can't hit the repeater with the ht from every place on the farm. Another feature is you can connect it to a computer and run echolink through it. The face can be mounted remotes or even upside down on the body of the radio. It also has two external speaker plugs. You can control those through the menu. I have found that is great if I connect a set of headphones and turn the volume down, when done just return it to internal speaker and leave the headphones connected.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

This radio is a great value for the money but watch who you buy from some are overpriced, go with ham radio outlet or gigaparts, they have the best price for the money, also make sure you get a unmodified one, because if you want the mars mod make sure someone professional does it, gigaparts will do it when you buy. i did not opt for this as i'm a Ham and do not go outside my ham bands, but i know some of you do i just chose not to. But the radio is hands down the best performer i have had even on a hot 100+ day it has not onse failed me or overheat.
