Excellent functionality and easy to use

Only had this thing a week, but so far so good. Catch-up tv is easy to use and includes access to all the major broadcast channels, unlike the LG unit it is replacing. Writing to disk is fairly easy, and includes a 'finish' step which allows the disk to be read by any other disk player, unlike the LG unit it is replacing. Have not used the connectivity functionality as yet, but I'm sure it will be equally as good.

  • Most critical review

A bit of a rip off for a product less well specified than the earlier one it replaced and a cobbled together menu.

I bought this to replace a 5 year old Panasonic DMR-BWT700 which has developed an intermittent fault. One of the planned uses was to continue to digitise my old VHS collection but alas it doesn't have a SCART input. In fact it doesn't have ANY type of input (confirmed by Panasonic UK) and so is useless for this purpose. The one I bought was a refurbished unit from Richer Sounds so at least I didn't pay full RRP for it but it still cost me about two hundred quid more than the old one for a less well specified product. The firmware menu now consists of 3 different styles cobbled together (the DMR-BWT700 had 2 styles) and as far as I can see the only advantage is the 1TB capacity hard drive over the 320GB in the old unit (a quick check on line showed that 1TB drives are less than 20 quid dearer than 320GB ones) so I think you will agree this product is a rip off.

  • Confusing menu system

This was bought to replace an older Panasonic model which has stopped recognising bu-rays. The machine works fine and does all I require, but the menu system is rather confusing since some screens are the same as the earlier model while others are quite different. This is just change for change sake like so much software today and contributes nothing to the usability of the machine. Some functions on the remote control have been moved about unnecessarily creating further confusion. Finally the lack of interface connections on the back panel is another retrograde step, Panasonic needs to properly consider their market and provide those functions which the advanced user needs.

  • Not A Bad Unit From Panasonic

This isn't a bad unit only issue I have with it is the connections on the back are very few there is only HDMI, RF In & Out, Coaxial Conector Eathnet Connection & USB on back but lacks the Audio inputs on back which all previous Panasonics has had till this model all in all though give it 7 out of 10

  • Not 4K

I bought this model as it is advertised as 4k. When I tried to play a 4k dvd it would not play. I contacted Panasonic only to be told it will not play 4k dvds it only up scales them. The advertising states that it is 4k compatible which it is on Netflix . The advertising is very misleading as I come across other people who have had the same problem. At over £400 you would think that it would play 4k dvds. Very disappointed in Panasonc for the misleading advertising. If you want to play 4k dvds DO NOT BUY this model.

  • The operating system is very well thought out.

I previously bought the smaller 320GB HD version. I am a big fan of these Blu-Ray recorders. The operating system is complex but very well thought out. I archive a lot of documentary programmes in standard quality to Blu-Ray discs which I buy for about 50p each. I record items from the local TV News programmes to DVD and send them to friends. Easy to make compilations of clips - a modern version of making a compilation tape. A first class machine.

  • Excellent product; easy to use.

Very pleased with the Panasonic DMR-BWT850EB DVD recorder. Have copied over 10hrs HD video on a doulle layer Blue Ray DVD from the hard drive. A good paper manual is included which is easy to understand.

  • Excellent unit, well designed, quiet, great interface.

This is a fabulous unit. We had Panasonic DVRs for years and recently switched to a Humax. What a mistake! The software on the Humax was absolutely appalling - so much so that it drove us completely nuts. What a wonder it is to be back in the well-designed interface of Panasonic. As we also have a Panasonic TV that is helpful too.

  • Everthing you need in one box

A smart box with PVR, DVD and Blu-ray player and recorder, Freeview HD play, catch-up service, Youtube and Netflix with a web browser over wi-fi or cable, DLNA server and more. So much packed into one small black box - amazing - the only downside to all this functionality is that at first there seems to be a labyrinth of menus to navigate, a bit confusing to start with but you soon get used to it and finding your way around the machine becomes second nature. The only other complaint would be the lack of input connections on the back so you can't connect a satellite box or even a VCR to backup your old tapes like you could on earlier Panasonic models. Despite these niggles and the steep price tag I'm very happy with this machine and would recommend it to any one.
