    Nice Locomotive for the Price

I've only test run the Shay for about an hour total but appears to be smooth running. The detail is outstanding and if placed in a glass case and never run it would make a nice man cave/office display piece. The only problems I see are placing a train crew in the cab, I guess I'll have to remove the roof to place the figures at their stations. The initial lubrication points on the running gear are a chore and depending how many hours you run it, needs lots of lube "preventive maintenance" (according to the instructions). Still it's a great looking steam engine, it's affordable and worth a look!

    Minor Shay problems

This is a wonderfully detailed model. After following manufacturers DVD instructions the Locomotive was fully lubricated. Within the first half-hour the front coupler fell off. The screw holding the coupler was either too small or the mounting hole oversized and stripped. A work in progress. Within the second hour an extremely small screw holding the valve gear fell out jamming the running gear. I've yet to discover where it was located and have not run the engine since. Another work in progress. While the engine was running it is an amazing model and ran very smooth and quiet.

  • Great price for a very interesting locomotive

This is my first Spectrum series locomotive. I was very pleased with the detail on this moderately complex model. I did myself a favor and replaced all the suggested Bachmann lubricants with high quality Nano-Oil lubricants. Before using the Nano-Oil, it took 9 volts to get the locomotive moving, and it drew 2.6 amps to crawl around a R1 oval of track. After using the Nano-Oil, the engine continued to speed up at 9V for a couple of minutes while the current dropped to 1.6 amps. After 4 or 5 minutes, the voltage needed to start moving was around 6 volts. I believe all the difference had to do with good quality lubrication getting spread around. My only issue is that the hook and loop (LGB style) coupler supplied with the locomotive doesn't fit it, and even after I modified the loco (drilling and tapping) to mount the coupler, it didn't actually couple with any of my other rolling stock (LGB, Bachmann, USA Trains, HLW) because the height of the coupler was far too low. I ended up having to purchase a pair of Kadee couplers to get this locomotive to mate to any of my rolling stock. Adding a sound card was also a big improvement. The Phoenix PB11 fit in easily and makes the locomotive sound as great as it looks.

  • One of the Best

The Shay model is super nice with great detail work. Lots of extras included. You can display or run it so it appears to be oil fueled or coal fueled. The included DVD is really well done and shows you exactly show to lubricate. Lots and lots of places need this attention. The gear drive makes this a superb addition to anyone's G scale layout. Well worth the money.

  • Work of art

This Bachmann Shay is beautiful and runs great. It is set up for sound and DCC. Installing a Soundtraxx Tsunami2 was easy, all the connections are in the coal bunker. These are discontinued so get one while you can.

  • Art in motion!!

Smooth and quiet runner. Even better, once I can get radio control and sound installed. Need to set up on railroad outside, to really test run it! A 5 foot test track does NOT do justice! Movement of cylinders is impressive!

  • Great locomotive

I am fascinated by this type of geared locomotive and wanted one large enough to display in my library. I purchased rollers so that it can be powered and allow people to see the gearing in action.
