An inexpensive taborpipe that is ideal for outdoor performances
Tabor pipes usually play an octave higher, and consequently louder and shriller, than penny whistles.
Unlike wooden pipes they are weatherproof and require little maintenance. They are also louder than most other tabor pipes. These features make them ideal for outdoor performances, but they can be uncomfortably loud when played in confined spaces.
Like many penny whistles they are tuned slightly sharp. This is not particularly noticeable because the pipe usually plays an octaves higher than other instruments. It can be fixed by moving the mouthpiece, which is not an easy task since Generation switched to heat-resistant glue.
Also, the F# hole tends to be relatively flat. This is a common flaw in cheap penny whistles. It can be fixed by extending the middle hole back towards the mouthpiece, by drilling or filing.
This replaces my wooden 3 hole pipe that I loaned abroad and will one day get back. Mine was made for me by a fellow instrument maker now long dead.
It was nice to play a couple of tunes on yours before going back to work.
Thank you.
