This is a similar collection to the UK’s “The Ultimate Collection” from 2006. Whereas that compilation included various remixes (in common with George Lucas and Star Wars, Richard Carpenter loves to tamper with his earlier work), this one contains the songs exactly as they appeared on the original Carpenters albums and untouched since then.
Ticket to Ride and Top of the World were both re-recorded in 1973, and it’s these versions we’re familiar with. The earlier album recordings are here, and it has to be said, the 1973 versions of both are vastly superior.
Other tracks might sound a bit different, with no re-mixes or tampering, but the recordings themselves are the same as the ones we know.
The only exception to the rule is Those Good Old Dreams, which isn’t the original vinyl album mix. Instead we get the familiar mix with less synth.
Several tracks such as Goofus, (Want You) Back in My Life Again, Beechwood 45789 and Make Believe It’s Your First Time, are not on the UK Ultimate Collection, and similarly that album has a few lesser-known songs not on here, but if you do already have one and not the other, you might not need both.
If you have neither, then Ultimate has the remixes and familiar Ticket To Ride / Top of the World - it’s the remastered-remixed Star Wars - whereas Collected is like Star Wars original 1977-83 editions!
