  • Brilliant !

I bought this as I already have a cordless Makita drill and driver and got a charger and spare 4amp battery with them, so I thought I’d save some money and just buy the ‘bare’ hedge cutter... and I’m over the moon with it. It came well packaged and the nice sized 52cm blade was covered with a hard plastic sheath to protect the user. As I’d already charged up the battery I set about my overgrown privet hedge straight away. First noticeable plus was that the trimmer is light but robust, and as soon as I attached the battery the balance became perfect. It is nowhere near as noisy as my old Black and Decker model but that made no difference to the cutting power ... brilliant !! I managed to cut the whole hedge in less than half the time it took me when I had a corded version, and totally safer. I checked the battery after completion and there was still 50% left .. 👍👍👍 If I had to pick fault with anything I can only ask Makita to supply a protective cover for the battery terminals for the ‘bare’ models they sell as the hedge trimmer is now hanging proudly in my garage with a surgical glove stretched over the terminals to keep dust off it as I have uncoupled the battery to use with my other Makita tools, (which is probably the reason why I and everyone else who buys a bare model do after use) I would recommend these hedge cutters to anyone 100%

  • Makita cordless hedge trimmer

Yet another brilliant addition to the makita cordless range. No more mixing oil and fuel!! I already have the batteries so just brought the bare unit. Light and easy to use, plenty of power and excellent running time. 10 out of 10

  • Makita DUH523Z

Excellent cordless hedge trimmer! I have been using this to cut back a Russian Vine which has invaded my back garden. It has plenty of power and will cut through surprisingly tough and woody parts of the plant. I've been using a 4ah battery that was supplied with my Makita drill and on a full charge this hedge trimmer lasts for ages. Brilliant value for money!

  • Simple and practical

If you have Makita kit and batteries then this is great. Like all battery powered equipment just pick it up and go. Simple. it’s two handed operation so provides a safe means of use. Cuts well so two thumbs up.

  • Quality build and easy to use

Powerful and low vibration it works well and is well made, the batteries seem to last quite a while. Best of all it is a lot more convenient to pick up and use, no fuel and 2 stroke to mix, or long trailing power leads mean you can just do a bit and come back to the job later. If you need to transport it there is no fuel smell or chance of spillage

  • MAKITA DUH523Z 18v Lithium-ion Cordless 52cm Hedge Trimmer (Body)

I started buying Makita 18v Li-ion tools last year, to replace older Ni-cad battery tools, which eventually gave up the ghost, and what a difference! I decided to buy this trimmer to add to my collection, after reading the reviews (all good). This is an excellent trimmer, as all the other reviewers have said. Again, like all Makita tools, this is very well made, sturdy yet light. I have 2 privet hedges, 30 metres long, 2 metres high, & 600mm wide. The trimmer managed both of these easily, and the battery was still going strong. I bought this as body only, as I already have batteries & a charger for my other Makita tools. The other thing is, that this was a good test for the battery which is a 3Ah 18v, generic (not made by Makita). I just hope the battery is reliable over time. I do have genuine Makita batteries, which are again excellent, just expensive to buy. Back to the trimmer. I have struggled over the years with heavy petrol & electric trimmers, which do the job very well, but take their toll on elbows, shoulders, back etc. I wish this battery model had been available years ago, then I wouldn't be in the state I am now. I would highly recommend this trimmer to anyone who has hedges to cut, either on a domestic basis, (or as a full time gardener), and all Makita products in this range (18v Li-ion) are rated for industrial use. As with all cutting tools (petrol, electric or battery), there is a limit to the size of cut. This model is recommended for up to 10mm diameter, which for most people is more than adequate. I have found over the years, that it is much easier to cut the hedges on a regular basis, and takes only an hour & a half, rather than let them get overgrown, and take half a day. The trimmer comes with a blade guard, and has a hole through the handle, which allows it to be hung vertically on a nail, saving storage space Sure you can probably find something cheaper, but my advice is don't waste your money. Buy this trimmer and you won't regret it.

  • 👍🏽

A good tool that’s efficient, very light and has a surprisingly low draw on battery power. My petrol powered trimmer is now redundant. JF

  • Great little hedge trimmer

I bought this for my wife to use as our large petrol hedge trimmer is too heavy for her. She loves it. We have about 100m of mixed native hedging to cut as well as several large evergreen 'balls' and this trimmer managed to cut everything in it's path. It can jam if you cut too fast and it encounters branches too large, but it's simple to get it re-started and it will then cut the branch if you take it a bit slower, sawing your way through. I have the 5 ampH battery and a half charge on one battery is all it takes to cut the lot. Perfect! Comes highly recommended.

  • Well made and effective

Less powerful than I expected compared to a mains powered hedge trimmer, but still very effective and easy to use. Maybe the newer brushless devices are better, but are 3 times the price. Good value for the money.
