  • compact & portable

Very nice all mode, low power, transceiver. Perfect for outdoor or indoors. Controls seem solid, case & attachments are sturdy. Screen is small, but the whole thing is 'compact & portable', icons etc are readable. Menu is easy to navigate. Sound from speaker is good.

  • Amazingly small but still full featured

Very small and compact, and seems to do everything, including CB (FM, AM or USB) for which it would be an expensive solution. Still getting used to its complex menu system! The internal NiMH batteries don't last long on receive despite using the front antenna to save 30mA drain of the internal antenna relay. The front panel BNC socket takes a lot of space in this small set when an aerial is plugged in, not so good for the large fingered user getting to the SEL knob. The screen is OK despite its small size, once you get used to the symbols. Good to have the plethora of FT817 stuff on the web to fall back on, as it's pretty much the same device but with updated components. Loads of operating experinece out there. Because iof its small size, found plenty of 'man bag' cases that would do instead of the £20 dedicated case.

  • Portable shack in a box, what isn't to like!

Absolutely great radio. Not sure it is hugely improved over the FT817 but still good. The usual issue, as with most shack in a box portables is the lack of battery life. To a degree, this can be resolved by considering a LiPo battery pack to replace the normal nicad pack. Alternatively have a bag of good quality rechargables and use the battery tray option. All of that said, I have used this radio in the shack most days since purchase. It is currently being used as a driver for a QO-100 satellite transverter and does the job really well. Reasonable receive audio, considering the size of the internal speaker (external speaker added in the shack). Transmit audio was always commented on as good. This has been improved further by the addition of a small mixing desk. Would I buy one again? Without a doubt. FT-817 or FT-818 is hard to beat for QRP portable operation.
