Very compact mobile drill grinder that fits in the toolbox!!!

Quite a small compact machine than expected, is robust, sturdy and a plus point is that it fits in my Dewalt t-stacker nicely though! The rubber feet means it stands pretty well on my portable work bench at work, instructions fairly easy to go by and the attachment, the drill holder easy to use and set!! The motor is quiet and smooth although runs hot however not really an issue unless it is switched on for a long duration!! The trick is to practice inserting the drill holder into the orifice to then connect with the grindstone, twisting to the left then to the right being careful not to push as one side of the drill bit will grind away. Being an electrician, i like my engineer colleagues, have many blunt drill bits in their toolboxes!! After a good practice of access and getting the feel of how this machine works, it seems to do the job of sharpening the range (about 3mm-13mm) of bits! For the price here, the SMS2008 is ok, sharpens blunt drill bits of any age and shape, that is all it does, it does not replace a bench grinder and I think time will tell using it on the construction sites i go on whether it will stand knocks, bumps and rigourous treatment!! Would I recommend it, I thnk i can but it only arrived this week!!!

Sealey bench mounted drill sharpener SMS2008

First the instructions are in a tiny font and as far as i am concerned not that helpful. I learned more from watching demos on u tube. Having used the machine yes it does the job ok. The thing that i disliked most was the part that is oscillated to sharpen the drill was very notchy and felt poorly made. If you have a low volume of work for it it will probably suffice but if you have a lot of work I would buy a better machine.

  • Not entirely convinced yet.

I was frustrated that each drill hub I tried soon got frustrating due to blunt bits, hence this purchase! The unit appears to clean up the business end very nicely. Here is the thing, on use of these sharpened bits I not convinced of benefits- I think I’m possibly doing something wrong but I have watched loads of setup videos. Jury is still out, sorry.

It does the job well but you have to keep checking that it is grinding the faces correctly. You can soon have a drill bit with the tip ground off centre specially on the smaller sizes (3-5mm). I am used to the old way of using a grinding wheel. But i don't have access to one anymore.

  • Sharpens drill bits!

much more robust than I imagined it would be. Once your figure out the separate steps needed it is remarkably simple to use and effective. And quick, resharpened 5 heavy duty 10mm Cobalt drills in a few moments.

  • A pretty decent HSS bit sharpener for the money

Very pleased. It works better than all the cheaper bit sharpeners I've tried in the past, and more accurately than I've ever been able to manage by hand, too. The diamond wheel keeps its geometry (and spares are available). It is mid-range rather than high end, as there is a little give in the holder and there is no choice of tip geometry (other than to split the point or not), but it easily comes up to expectations for the price. A few minor points: I'd have liked a light down in the hole where positioning the bit is done, which is all made of black materials. I also find it a bit fiddly for drill bits down towards the minimum size of 3mm, it seems best from 4mm or 5mm upwards. It blew its fuse pretty quickly (5x20mm 2A quick blow) and no spares were included. And the transparent dust flap is really quite poor; a tray or some newspaper is really needed to stop HSS dust getting everywhere. But the only real problem I had so far was with one of my bits that had a somewhat tighter spiral to the flutes than is common. The positioning doofa didn't seem to get its tip at the right orientation, resulting in a too wide, flat point. For all normal fluted bits it has worked fine though.

  • good but could be better

Instruction leaflet could be better the instruction for lining the drill bit is not very clear and the photo is to dark and to small . A lined drawing would do a better job . Only just used mine so early days yet . The motor i would like a bit bigger one sounds a bit challenged when re dressing a larger size drill . But over all looks ok at this early stage.

  • Good bit of kit

Easy to set the bit up and easy to use , the sharpener produces a good enough tip on the drill bit . It could be argued that the sharpener is a bit plasticky, but for the prices it does a good enough job .

  • Sealey Drill Bit Sharper

Good functionality for the price. Sharpens well for 4mm drills and and sizes up. Not so precise at sharpening smaller drill sizes down from ~4mm. Diamond stone grinds masonry bits easily. I now have a box of sharpened drills!

  • A Tool Fit For Purpose.

I have only tried a couple of drills large and small but found the tool to be very efficient, the motor ran smoothly and quietly, contact with the diamond wheel is light and brief resulting in a clean sharp edge. The motor has enough power to do the job without vibrating off the bench and the procedure is simple and fool proof. A well thought out and manufactured device.
