The more things change.....
Do you want to experience NE Afganistan as it was and in large measure still is? Read this book. The ancient Kafiristan, now Nuristan, is as remote and resistant to change as it gets. The New York Times had a great piece confirming this in December, 2015. Read the article and compare Newby's experience in the 1950's. In no other place will you find tales of jihad (1895) from men who were there as children. Newby wrote some wonderful books about his personal experiences, but this is the jewel in the crown.
