  • Competent product severely marred by Samsung

The CLP-680ND printer is a competent printer but Samsung is the root cause of many problems you will encounter. The printer might look good but seems to be flimsily made. It will print double-sided and in colour. The colour output is good and black is intense. It will work with PCs (from Windows XP and with Linux) and with Macs (from MacOS 10.4 – but see later). As much as the purchase price of the printer is low, it should be borne in mind that Samsung (like many other printer manufacturers nowadays) are "chipping" the toner cartridges in just the same way as printer manufacturers have been "chipping" inkjet printer cartridges for many years. They do this "chipping" to force you to buy their more expensive "genuine" toner cartridges and will do so before the toner in your existing cartridges have been spent. A full set of toner cartridges for this printer with "genuine" Samsung toner is hideously expensive. They sell the printers cheap to "catch" you in this trap. You might think you can get "compatible" toner cartridges much cheaper, and indeed you see them advertised, but this printer interrogates the toner cartridges to check they are "genuine" and will refuse to use them if they are not. It will also check the serial number and page count for each toner cartridge and refuse to re-use them if you have had them re-filled. Printer manufacturers are actively in a "war of technology" against suppliers of "compatible" cartridge suppliers in an attempt to maintain their ability to make you to buy their "genuine" cartridges at a premium price. This is not unique to Samsung. You are warned! If you are happy to throw away part-used toner cartridges into land fill, risk wasting money on "compatible" toner cartridges and then pay for very expensive "genuine" toner cartridges from Samsung then by all means do so. But do so in the knowledge of how you are being manipulated and forced into parting with more of your cash than is reasonable. For this reason I will continue to use my old "unchipped" laser printer for monochrome paperwork and I advise you to do likewise. A serious problem with this printer isn't actually the printer. It relates to Samsung's bizarre attitude to the provision of the software that you will need to install on your computer. It has cost me a lot of time and inconvenience even though I am very IT literate. The CD supplied with the printer contains SOME of the software that should be provided with the printer. This bizarre behaviour is, as far as I know, unique to Samsung. For example, the worst situation is a MacOS X 10.4 computer, which IS supported by the printer, because you will find NOTHING on the CD that is usable! I warn you that to a lesser extent ALL kinds of computer will have something missing from the installation CD that comes with the printer! The manual on the installation CD refers you to the Samsung web site in many places to download the rest of the software. Unfortunately, my experience of Samsung's web site is that it is an inconsistent shambles and rarely has links to the software that the installation CD user guide said was available. I spent many hours hunting down software for this printer on third-part "driver sites" simply because Samsung failed to honour their promise of providing that same software on their own web site. You are warned! As an aside, the user guide on the installation CD is not very good. There is basic essential information but even this is littered with vague statements, little technical information and almost nothing to help you when you encounter a problem. The Samsung web site has some extra details, but not much. You might think a phone call with Samsung's telephone technical support will be quick and easy solution to these problems but it is unlikely in my experience... I spent a whole month of hassling Samsung by phone, letter and email to get them to fulfil just one of the "promises" made in the installation CD user guide - to supply a printer driver for MacOS X 10.4 (which was not on their web site). To be blunt, they don't seem to care once they've got your cash. As far as technical expertise and professionalism is concerned I found Samsung to be very variable, from tolerable to atrocious but always ineffient. I did not appreciate each telephone call repeating what had previously been "explored" and I did not appreciate the attempts to fob me off with lies, mis-information and bad attitude on many occasions. Finally, a minor niggle. The printer is usually quiet but likes to lurch briefly into life to "recalibrate" itself periodically for no obvious reason. It also likes to "recalibrate" frequently when printing. This makes it slower than advertised. If you are still thinking of buying this printer despite what I have written then you should also consider the "wireless" version of this printer, especially if you have a household full of mobile phone users.

  • Samsung CLP-680ND Colour Laser - great workhorse device

Excellent workhorse network colour laser - very fast and sets up easily with MAC/Linux/Windows PCs and has a small footprint. Super quality colour printing and crisp text. The extended "L" sized toners are sobbingly expensive (£300 for Samsung original set!!). I am always wary about re-manufactured which are cheaper but vary in quality. Judicious use of colour printing and using greyscale for standard text printing will eke out the low capacity cartridges - and using eco mode for drafting. Overall an excellent value device - can recommend
