Strong and well made
Deciding to open-up a disused fireplace, I bought this chimney cowl to keep out the jackdaws, which had filled the flue with nesting material over a number of years. I thought clearing it out would be a simple task, but in reality the jackdaws had been very busy indeed, having filled nearly the whole length of the flue with twigs, together with brambles, plastic and other rubbish. The job took me most of a whole day. The cowl is made of steel and appears well made. It is painted black, although no doubt it will begin to rust over the coming years. The design appealed to me because the prongs are sprung and fit inside the pot, unlike most other designs, which require a large diameter hose-clip type fastening on the outside. Having established that the pot was 8" in diameter, I simply reduced the diameter of the prongs by compressing them to just less than 8" using three heavy-duty cable ties, joined together. I then climbed onto the roof, inserted the prongs of the cowl into the pot and cut the cable ties. Hopefully there will be enough outward pressure exerted by the prongs to prevent the cowl coming off in even the strongest winds.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

A well made bird guard
The chimney bird guard is really easy to install, even off a roof ladder it was a 10 minute job, the only thing which was a little difficult was pushing the prongs in to fit inside the chimney pot, but that is what makes the guard so strong, after 2 weeks it’s still in place and most importantly no more jackdaws in my chimney and the draw when using the fireplace hasn’t been affected, I would definitely recommend if you don’t want the hassle of screwing in a jubilee clip to fasten down a plastic bird guardVerified purchase: YesCondition: New

This product covers it perfectly for me!
I was looking to replace the simple wire mesh I'd used to prevent Jackdaws nesting in the chimney, as it didn't stop them and pigeons perching there and doing what they do! I finally saw this product and was attracted by it's style, functionality, robust construction and of course, its price tag. When I opened the box I was immediately reassured that the cowl was everything I expected, i.e., very well-made and excellent value. Now it's in place, there's an notable absence of cooing noises coming down the chimney, so I guess the sloping cowl is an effective perching deterrent, as well as keeping the rain out. Picture attached and my tip is to use strong cord and a piece of wood to wind-in the tines 'tourniquet-style'. This makes it very easy to slide them inside the chimney pot. Happy to review & recommend this product.

Bought this to stop birds balling down the chimney. Benefits from a rain guard as well. If strength is more important than weight then these are for you.
