Jesus' Son is a visionary chronicle of dreamers, addicts, and lost souls. These stories tell of spiralling grief and transcendence, of rock bottom and redemption, of getting lost and found and lost again. The narrator of these interlinked stories is a young, unnamed man, reeling from his addiction to heroin and alcohol, his mind at once clouded and made brilliantly lucid by these drugs. In the course of his adventures, he meets an assortment of people, who seem as alienated and confused as he; sinners, misfits, the lost, the damned, the desperate and the forgotten. Our of their bleak, seemingly random lives, Denis Johnson creates modern-day parables of a harsh and devastating beauty.

  • Superb literature writing.

Denis Johnson is a writer who, with several of his writing contemporaries, write about gritty reality in an uncompromising but compassionate way. The genes of this American genre can be found in Faulkner, Hemingway, Flannery O'Connor and Cormac Mccarthy. The only negative I could suggest might be that in the reading experience there is bleakness and hopelessness from the lives of the everymen, which might be depressing to read - but then there's the pleasure of contact with a literary work of genius.

  • A great book to read & discuss.

I attended a session of ‘creative writing’ and the facilitator-Stephen-read excerpts from this book. I was so taken by the description also by the following class discussion, that I wanted a copy of the book right away. Although I have not finished reading the book, I am enjoying it immensely.
