Invisible sharpness and clarity
This lens is where the lowest price meets the highest image quality. I have had two of them, the first one was excellent like the second, but I sold it for the new 50 mm STM. But I missed the extra 10 mm, and now I use the 40 more than ever. It's a serious performer, you can just read the test reports. It may not look beautiful on a dslr in the beginning, but you'll get used to it, and love the results. For my part, it sits on a full format camera, and it is as good for video as for stills. With some 10x magnifying filter glass, it can be used as a macro lens. I have had results that I have sold. Go on, this is a no brainer.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

But best thing is I got a surprise free uv filter and mini tripod in my box, which looks just about strong enough to hold the weight on my massive work camera. Don't panic over a pancake!
It may not be the sexiest looking lens. It may look a little stubby on your DSLR (I personally use it with an adopter on an EOS M) but this lens if highly capable. I have no complaints about auto focus, and the image is sharp across the shot, and chromatic abortions are virtually nil. On a crop sensor (1.6) camera, the equivalent focal length is quite long (64mm) which really suits my photography. On a full from camera 40mm focal length would be a perfect all round lens. Best thing is the price. For the money, it's rude not to have one of this super slim lenes in your kit bag.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Using Canon's 40mm pancake lens
Having read a number of very positive reviews of this lens - and thinking hard and long as it seemed unlikely tha such a cheap lens (less than £100) could collect such high praise. However many years ago I used a similar lens on a Pentax and remembered how compact and light it was, so decided to go ahead and purchase. I perhaps should have guessed it would be a grey import as it was £30 odd cheaper than mainline suppliers but so far it ticks all the boxes. It's very compact, well built and is producing some impressively sharp images. Above all it makes my 5D Mk3 much less obvious for casual shooting and so much lighter to carry around. Great little lens! What you pay versus what you get is unreal. The sharpness is remarkable even down at F/2.8, chromatic aberrations are negligible, while barrel distortion is hardly noticeable.
