  • ONE OF DENON'S BEST

One of the most important requirements for me in searching for a replacement for an ageing DAB radio in my garage was ...having a good DAB radio! My old radio can no longer find the stations as they relocated on the DAB bandwidth, so I needed something newer and with the ability to tune in, and remain tuned in to DAB stations. Reading endless reviews on all other makes of DAB mini systems and radios, Denon seemed to come out top in the DAB stakes (ever since the older DM35 DAB in fact). Many other brands actually seemed problematic by comparison. So this seemed to be the brand to choose particularly as I'm in a fringe area regarding DAB signal strength. A neighbour has had the M38 from new and has been very pleased with it. As I was looking for music while I'm in the garage working on my car even a budget radio would have been fine, and I was initially going to choose a new but budget unit for this purpose, however I started noticing that for the similar price of a new budget unit I could buy a second-hand quality mini system which would do the job. I missed out on the bidding in eBay for a later M39 albeit without speakers and didn't want to pay so much for a later M40 model. Luckily a unit came up for sale with some JBL Control One speakers included in the sale for a reasonable buy-now price, unfortunately no speaker mounts for the wall were included but i went for it anyway and have not been disappointed! The uniti bought was all fully working, but was terribly dusty inside, so I took the outer casing off and cleaned it out carefully with a new paint-brush and a can of compressed air, while someone held a vacuum cleaner nozzle close by. Once plugged in and retuned, I was blown away by the clarity of sound - even with some suspect cables (which I have now replaced with some proper Oxy free copper cable). These new cables cost me around £15 for 8m and arrived very quickly and have made the sound noticeably "cleaner" - another eBay winner! I spend a lot of time restoring a car in the garage, and I enjoy music from Classical through Modern Jazz to Rock. I will predominantly be listening to DAB broadcasts, and was prepared to buy an external aerial but have found that even in my fringe reception area in the Cotswolds that the Denon standard 'T' wire aerial has been more than good enough, though I believe that using a quality external aerial will increase the gain significantly enough to make it worth it. I may do that later but for now I'm happy. Since setting up and tuning in the DAB radio on the Denon M38 unit I have had no signs of drop-out; non of the 'popping and squelching' sounds associated with a poor digital signal, and have not lost any channels after the unit has been switched off for any length of time. I've sited it in the rafters of my wooden garage, and have monitored how hot it gets - it does not get hot! Only warm, so I am getting some suitable reticulated foam to put around the vents to stop any dust getting in. The JBL Control One speakers are very ruggedly built. Again as the Denon uniti itself, these needed a seriously good dusting internally, and are clearly showing signs of age with fairly battered and scuffed outer casings. I have no idea if they have been driven hard in the past but they work perfectly without distortion or problems of any kind and are clear and seem to perform very well with the front end Denon unit, they are by far full-sounding enough for my ears - a Sub-woofer is not needed in my opinion and certainly not for my garage application! Classical music is clear and detailed without having to drive them hard, Jazz and rock even during the busiest of musical passages gets through nicely with detail and clarity and a full richness of sound. the combination I am sure could be improved with better speakers, but the Control Ones are ideal for the garage environment because of their very rugged build. In conclusion, I would be more than happy with this combination in my house, leave alone my garage, and would choose the same again. Hopefully I wont need to and this unit will give me years of pleasure to come, moreover if it does fail catastrophically, I would still choose Denon again for the proven reliability of the DAB performance without breaking the bank! Premium sound in my garage for the same price as a budget system!

  • Sounds big but takes very little room

Great sound from a very small footprint. It does have some weaknesses but overall it is very good! The CD player is prone to go off calibration but if you google it you can find the process to re-calibrate it and bring it back to full life fairly easily. It's worst downfall is the remote.... don't damage it or lose it because if you do the whole unit becomes pretty useless as very little can be done from the very few buttons on the unit itself (and replacement remotes aren't available new or used)
