  • The title fits well with the theme of the novel which is captivating reading.

I have only recently begun ready the novels of John Le Carre. When I think of George Smiley, I see Alec Guinness and I don't think anyone could have played the role, better. I also saw, recently again, on television, 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold', starring Richard Burton. In my younger days, I had seen this film, but I didn't understand it and it didn't seem to fit in with any of spy thrillers of that era - guns, looks and silk sheets. I'm 68 now and now I'm beginning to understand 'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold', 'Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy' and 'Smiley's People'. I lived through the Cold War and it seems today to still be alive and kicking - kicking very hard. I've gone to the author I wish I had read many years earlier, but was not ready for. Now I am, and 'Call For The Dead' made sense and I'm ready for the next, and the next.

  • I would have preferred the full edition.

I would have preferred the full edition. As I read this it was clear where sections had been edited out in order to achieve the shorter format.

  • Introducing George Smiley

Introducing George Smiley to the world, this book is amazingly well-written as a first book in a long career of excellent thrillers by John le Carre, most of which have been turned into box office hits at the cinema.. Never seen a film of this one though-will have a look on Amazon Prime...
