About this product

Product Information

A facsimile edition of Bradshaw's Handbook of 1863, the book that inspired the BBC television series 'Great British Railway Journeys'. When Michael Portillo began the series 'Great British Railway Journeys', a well-thumbed 150-year-old book shot back to fame. The original Bradshaw's guides had been well known to Victorian travellers and were produced when the British railway network was at its peak and as tourism by rail became essential. It was the first national tourist guide specifically organized around railway journeys, and this beautifully illustrated facsimile edition offers a glimpse through the carriage window at a Britain long past.

  • Great book, info in it on places still quite relevant even today.

Having been a fan of the Great British Railways programme and seeing Michael Portillo bang on about the book I decided I'd like to get one. Thankfully the book was reproduced because of the TV series (imagine getting one of the original ones, like seen in the series, would be quite a challenge). The book is full of interesting facts about areas and considering it's 1861 we are talking about there are still places (pubs/hotels etc) mentioned which are still here today. Really interesting book and glad I bought it.

  • Bradshaw's Great British Railways Handbook

This is a book I've been looking for for ages and I've not been disappointed it's excellent. The book takes you back to an era of you're Great Grandparents ( if you're like me anyway aged 49 ), there's descriptions of stations near you that no longer exist. If you're thinking of buying a copy don't hesitate it's well worth the money and next time you go on a train journey don't forget to take it with you !!!!!!

  • Quality all through

I am impressed with the quality of the book. It’s content is still relevant today but speaks with pride about England’s heritage and contribution to the country and at the time the Empire.
