  • An inexpensive way to achieve very nice 35mm scans.

I am a Mac user and required either a Plustek 7600i or 8200i for my OSX installation. The difference between the two models is that the 8200i comes in a blue plastic case with newer software while the 7600i comes in a black case with an older version of the software. The specs on the two scanners are otherwise similar. The SilverFast software which originally came with the 7600i and 8200i was not compatible with my current operating system OSX 10.11.3. Compatible upgrades for SilverFast from LaserSoft imaging are not inexpensive, and I chose to go with VueScan from Hamrick Software which is much more reasonably priced, offers free and frequent upgrades, and can be used on multiple scanners. My reasoning was that, although the current SilverFast has additional bells and whistles, I am reasonably adept in Photoshop and therefore just required a clean scan from the scanner software. I have not been disappointed with the scanner output via VueScan.

  • Still a great scanner for preserving old slides

Works great, especially once the SilverFast software was upgraded to a more recent version compatible with Windows 10. For family portraits or other special images, the extra IR scan that can be performed to help automatically remove scratches and dust from the image is outstanding. Of the ~500 slides I scanned most were Kodak Kodachrome from 1965-1982 that were in great condition. The store bought slides (not Kodachrome) had massively faded to a reddish hue, but that wasn’t a big deal because there weren’t useful for me project. I did scan one of them and was amazed at how the SilverFast software was able to restore the color (with a little user adjustment to guide it).

  • Does the job.

Does the job, I was looking for, more accuracy, than using a dSLR. Yes, it takes a little longer, but thats fine.
