  • The standard of the film world

If you are a medium format film 6×6 user, the Hasselblad is the standard for the system camera with interchangeable lenses, backs, and finders. The Zeiss lenses are unsurpassed in optical quality. For USA buyers, the Hasselblad was common, and lots of lenses, backs, and other accessories are available. And the lenses and accessories are inexpensive compared to their original prices in the 1990s and early 2000s. The Rollei 6×6 cameras had similar lenses, but the Rolleis are harder to find in the USA market, and repairs may be a challenge. Press the shutter on a Hasselblad, and you hear and feel a precision "chunk" noise. It is such a totally different emotional feeling than taking an exposure with a semi-plastic super-duper button-covered DSLR. There are plenty of film-haters out there, but I challenge them to do some meaningful work with film. Warning: 220-size film is not in production, so don't buy a 220 back with a used Hasselblad. Warning 2: the older 500C/M bodies usually have stock and dim finder screens. More recent bodies have the much brighter Acute-Matte screens. Factor the price of new a new screen if you buy an older body. Regardless, the key is have fun and do good work.

  • Excellent craftsmanship and reliable build quality with a timeless design.

Hasselblad is known for reliability and beautiful design and the 501CM is no exception. It has smooth operation, easy attachment and removal of lenses, backs, finders and screens with no frills ergonomics. This would be a great body to build around, upgrade to or use as back up. If you've been shooting with other medium format cameras you may not want to go back after using a Hasselblad camera.
