About this product

Product Information

Adapted from the play by Terence Rattigan, THE DEEP BLUE SEA stars Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz as Hester Collyer, the troubled wife of high court judge Sir William Collyer (Simon Russell Beale). Racked with emotional problems, Hester turns her back on her loveless marriage and sets up house with young ex-RAF pilot, Freddie Page (Tom Hiddleston). When her lover proves to be shallow and unreliable, Hester finds herself stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, with suicide seeming to be the only option. The play was first adapted to screen in 1955, with Vivien Leigh as the tragic heroine.

ReviewsEmpire Magazine - In an age of hubbub, its patient elegance is a rare thing we should nurture., Guardian UK - The Deep Blue Sea is a melancholy film without a doubt, but with great sweetness and delicacy., Time Out - It's sad as a story and deeply evocative as a period piece., Daily Telegraph - The scars of the heart have their outward reflection on these dark, broken streets, with little pockets of warmth and solace in the pubs where Londoners huddle.

  • Good but Morbid

Set in the 1950’s an unfortunate storyline which has probably happened to a thousand women. An attempted suicide, sad violin music is played a bit too frequently, a short burst of shouting and bawling, however, this was contained to one scene only. Nobody smiles let alone laughs. Top quality actors who took their parts extremely well. It was morbid and depressing, had I’d known the full extent of the storyline I probably would not have bought it. No one had written any Reviews so I took pot luck and bought it.

  • Moody, muted colours except for the claret coat.

This film had it all. It was bursting with talent. Of course, it originates with an amazing script and then it bursts into exceptional professionalism from the screen writer, the director, actors et al. We loved this production. All the way through, I ached for Hester because I knew that she would not take the easy option. A woman of our times facing a very shaky future. Wonderful film.

  • unrequited love is no love at all

Based on the Terrence Rattigan play, it explores the nature of 'love', 'lust', seduction and adultery for all parties concerned. It should be obligatory viewing (or reading) for all unaware of the pitfalls of 'romantic' love.
