Worth buying if you like either Diana Ross or Billie Holiday
Mahogany was not a success at the time and is rather a mediocre film, but Diana Ross is marvellous in Lady Sings the Blues. It is a film and definitely not historically accurate, but does succeed in capturing something of the period and of the great jazz singer's character. Diana Ross's interpretation of the songs is a version and not a copy. There is a sense of tribute, but at the same time of exploration and expression in her own right. This and her acting make the film definitely worth watching. It is very good to see it available on DVD in the UK after many years of being impossible to find.
