The film elicits its scares out of what is not seen rather than what is, and Carpenter exploits that style perfectly. Vauge shapes move within the fog, while strange noises heard in the distance grow louder, and no one can say exactly what they are up against. THE FOG is one of Carpenter's earlier films and helped to establish his reputation as a master filmmaker.

    A terrible 4K conversion

    I have bought this movie in every version and format available, and this was the worst yet. Most notably, it was a lazy upscale rather than a new 4K digitisation from the original film stock. This results in a LOT of picture snow and noise caused by pixel interpolation. This really is an appalling lazy conversion. :-( Worse still, the image is overly contrasty, leading to loss of detail in all night and shadow areas. I bought this primarily for the comprehensive selection of extra and voice overs, which I have yet to watch, but this vintage class deserved so much better. If you are NOT interested in the extras, stick with the 1080p Studio Canal bluray which has none of the noise and has a clearer image. Bitterly disappointed.
