In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But when the two strike up a conversation - awkward but electrifying - something life-changing begins. Normal People is a story of mutual fascination, friendship and love. It takes us from that first conversation to the years beyond, in the company of two people who try to stay apart but find they can't. 'Brilliant ... It takes immense talent to write this well and make it look so easy ... This is a novel that one enjoys like comfort food, with delight, all in a rush, and only once it has been consumed does one realise how formidable and nourishing it is, how heavy it sits inside you, a treat you'll be digesting long after you leave the table.' - The Australian 'Rooney's work is undeniably a voice for millennial fiction. My generation. Reading it felt like someone had captured my thoughts (even the secret ones) and made me feel less alone - until it ended, and then it was heartbreaking.' - Annie Brown, Good Weekend, Sydney Morning Herald 'In Normal People, Sally Rooney essentially gives us a field guide to relating to other humans - with the in-built pleasures of an exceptionally good literary romance.' - Sydney Morning Herald 'What makes Rooney's books so captivating and impossible to put down is the way she crafts characters and dialogue-at times, the conversations in her books can seem so real that you almost feel like you're eavesdropping on something you shouldn't be.' - Vanity Fair 'The first great millennial novelist.' - The New Yorker

    Normal People

I enjoyed this book having first watched the television series which kept very true to the book. An interesting depth of the insecurities and misunderstandings of 2 young teenagers who start a relationship in schooldays through to their university years. A beautiful portrayal of a deep true love between Connell and Marianne.

  • Most critical review

Extremely poor writing, no ideas, nothing. Over-hyped because she's well connected

Complete rubbish. See the Amazon reviews. Don't waste your money (and your time) reading this.

  • A good read about young love

I am very fussy with literature but this book held me until the end. It wasn’t the best book I have ever read but the author certainly captures the essence of young love from the perspective of both characters.

  • Interesting but poor ending

Interesting novel and easy to read but quite difficult to follow in places as there are no speech marks so it's not always easy to follow whether it is description or a comment made by the characters. I also did not enjoy the unfinished and abrupt ending!

  • Wonderful story about adolescent and pre adulthood

Lovely story, interesting characters. As I had already seen the series, I could easily relate to the book. Hand on heart, I preferred the TV series more, as they brought the characters to life and I found it easier to follow. In the book, the storyline fluctuated too often between current and past tense, which I found a little confusing.

  • Great read

Really good book, sometimes a bit of a confusing read due to the lack of quotation marks but overall pretty good! If you liked the BBC adaptation, you’ll definitely love the book. Came in perfect condition and in great time

  • Such a good read.

Realistic love stories are always the most beautiful, such a good read. The chapters are weeks, months and sometimes years apart which makes its so interesting.

Interesting book. But very strange intentional lack of speech marks. Not sure about the front cover of the book picture. Two people in a sardine tin?!

  • Beautiful!

Having just watched the series on in BBC iPlayer (which I absolutely loved),I thought I would give the book a go and it didn't disappoint! I loved every page and read it 3 days!!

  • Great book

I actually wanted to read it again once I’d finished. A wonderful, perceptive tale of young love amid social pressures and also gently shines a light on the class system. Beautifully written. I read this before the tv show which was surprisingly faithful.
