Must have if you must get home.
I've been on a ride with a fully loaded touring bike when I broke a spoke 40 miles from the nearest bike shop with replacement spokes. This emergency replacement got me the whole way there without any additional drama. Pulls the rim back into line and off you go. Take a deep breath and read the instructions twice then do it. I have one in every seat bag along with patch kit, tools and spares.
