  • Sixties pre folk-rock classic

It should be remembered that the line up and experience of Fairport Mk 1 are very much set in the late 60's Summer of Love era. Songs on this album have a trippy "acid folk" feel. It also goes to show what a wonderful and inspirational guitarist and song writer Richard Thompson was in the early days. Judy Dyble's singing is excellent and well suited to this pre folk-rock classic

  • Fairport's debut album

This series of remasters with extensive sleeve notes represents a huge upgrade on what went before. This one in particular provides a fascinating glimpse into the original line-up, a sort of English Jefferson Airplane, whose psychedelic preoccupations would within a few years morph into the folk-rock ensemble par excellence, having little in common with the original concept. The self-titled debut album was the only one graced by the talents of Judy Dyble, who would shortly be replaced by Sandy Denny. The second album, What We Did on our Holidays, the first with Sandy, was a quantum leap forward but this one was an interesting and at time enjoyable venture by a band of enthusiastic youngsters with clear potential, though yet to find their direction, haunting the fringes of late 1960s Swinging London.
