Amazing nifty fifty
The best zoom lenses have become so good these days as to remove the need for prime lenses. Why bother with 6 or 8 lenses when 3 will do the job at least as well, and with greater compositional freedom and accuracy? Except, of course, that those zooms are large and heavy, and a stop or two dimmer than the primes they replace. So even if I didn’t strictly need a 50mm, I fell for this little gem when it came up on eBay at a good price. Not that it’s expensive new, but at half price it became a no-brainer. In purely technical terms, older Nikon 50s (all the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.8D versions) are no match at large apertures for Nikon’s 24-70mm f:2.8 set to 50mm. However, f-stop for f-stop, this 1.8G prime is very slightly sharper than the zoom in the corners while the zoom remains slightly better in the centre. But you really need to pixel-peep to see any difference. So that’s not what it’s about. It’s more about cutting the size and weight of the camera/lens package almost in half, it’s about using the extra f-stop creatively, and it’s about making simpler and what somehow feels like “cleaner” picture choices. In that way this little thrifty fifty has been good for my soul, and it’s easily worth the extra weight in my camera bag.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

I really like this thing. The images are sharp, contasty and colourful and the focusing is fast and accurate (well it is on my D700 anyway). The downside is it is about £140 used instead of £75 for the f1.8D screw-drive version and it has a 58mm fliter thread instead of the more common 52mm. If you can afford it - you'll like it better. If you want to pay £250 up for you a used f1.4G then go for it but I doubt it'll be any better.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Better than lenses that cost over 4 times as much!!!
This lens is truly superb! For the money you won't find a better lens. The images are a hundred times better, sharper & more colourful than my Nikon 28-300mm zoom lens that cost over £700! Obviously it's a prime lens so no zoom but when you compare two images of the same subject it's embarrassing! As you can see, the brighter image is from the 50mm and blows the other away. Both photos taken on a Nikon D750 at the lowest image quality. I Normally do sports photographer which is why i've got the zoom & took photos of the flower as a reference, but the 50mm is that good I might just use that and crop in the photos after! This lens is well recommended!!!

This Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Lens is great for quick, up and shoot photos, which turn out extraordinary sharp super photos for the size of the lens. the lens is light, easy to operate and very good value. It is good for close up and long distant photos, I was pleasantly surprised.

One for the list of ‘essentials’
Everyone needs a fast standard prime lens - somewhere between 35 and 50mm (Full Frame equivalent) and no slower than f/2. Back in the days (everyone keeps telling me they’re over!) of DSLRs most camera manufacturers produced a compact, fast and reasonably cheap standard lens. Nowadays they seem to be getting less compact and more expensive. The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G is a fairly modern take on an established concept. It’s light, it’s fairly compact, it’s certainly cheap and it performs perfectly well for most people most of the time. Actually it performs more than well enough. I’m using it on a Nikon D850 which is as demanding a platform as exists today and it is fine. It’s probably better than my old f1.4 version in terms of IQ and in terms of speed - well, what’s a two-thirds of a stop to a modern sensor? New, used, the prices don’t seem to vary much. Just buy one and try it. If you hate it, sell it - you’ll only lose the price of a cup of coffee and you might even make the price of one!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Low light special
This lens is an excellent partner for the Nikon D7200, complementing the camera's low light ability to reduce the need for the use of flash, and avoid killing the atmosphere at indoor and evening/night time events. Focusing is fast and precise on AF, without the gear graunching noises associated with earlier models. It will give a full range of features on any of the Nikon DSLR models, both DX and FX format, and represents a far more economical proposition than the f1.4 lens, with only a marginal loss of capability. Its 75mm equivalent focal length on DX vs FX also gives an excellent portrait lens with the ability to control depth of field to a nicety. Sharpest 50mm and super value
I needed a short-ish focal lens with large aperture for astro pictures. So for me bokeh etc isn't of much interest, I just needed the sharpest lens at infinity and top quality coating that I can get for the best price. This ticks all the boxes.
