About this product

Product Information

Orphan, clock keeper, and thief, Hugo lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station, where his survival depends on secrets and anonymity. But when his world suddenly interlocks - like the gears of the clocks he keeps - with an eccentric, bookish girl and a bitter old man who runs a toy booth in the train station, Hugo's undercover life and his most precious secret are put in jeopardy. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a stolen key, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo's dead father form the backbone of this intricate, tender, and spellbinding mystery. With 284 pages of original drawings and combining elements of picture book, graphic novel and film, Brian Selznick breaks open the novel form to create an entirely new reading experience. Here is a stunning, cinematic tour de force from a boldly innovative storyteller, artist and bookmaker.

  • The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Gosh, this is such a great book. I would recommend to all. Being a teacher, I love the graphic novels and they really do engage the boys - always tricky with doing this when they resist reading...but looking at the fantastic sketches which are so well illustrated throughout the novel, and then the added narrative is just a real hook. It's a wonderful book to engage all those resistant readers for sure and I would definitely recommend. This is a book for all, a book which is on the national curriculum, but can easily be read for pleasure. The main character is Hugo, who is really mischievous and we follow his journey after he has lost his father...there are so many plot twists and so really, you don't know where this going. Set in 1930s Paris is incredible too...very atmospheric.
