I picked up A Larum b/c I love the theme song for the TV show "Detectorists," which is also by Johnny Flynn. I was hoping for the same level of creativity I hear in that song, but this album was a little more "put together" than what I expected.
I still enjoy about 80% of the songs on the album, and having heard his second album, this one is definitely superior.
His voice is great--the guitars are nice--the melodies are all right. It's good nu-folk, even if some of the instrumentation feels a bit too familiar and pop at times.
The highlight for me is that I cannot find anything to compare it to--which I find appealing. Johnny Flynn has an original sound and isn't as boring as the likes or the Lumineers or as bombastic as Mumford & Sons. There's a level of intimacy on this album that's hard to resist.
